AMML - Slide 10
This preparation of an acute myelomonocytic leukemia (M5a) shows
270⋅109/L
leukocytes of which 91% are monocytic blasts. The quantity AND size of the cells cause a high density on the smear which makes them impossible to photograph separately. The specimen came from a 28-year-old patient who presented to his family physician because of swollen lymph nodes and mild "discomfort." The GP prescribed antibiotics for two weeks, but then ordered blood tests because the symptoms did not abate.
