Pyropoikilocytosis - Slide 1
Hereditairy pyropoikilocytosis is an autosomal, recessive membrane defect of the erythrocyte. Because of this defect, there is continuous destruction and production of new erythrocytes in the bone marrow. In the smear an extreme variation of erythrocyte shape aberrations can be seen including teardrop cells, elliptocytes, echinocytes and schistocytes. Due to this increased production, polychromatic and basophilic stippling can be seen as well.
The hemoglobin of this patient was
6.8 mmol/L
with an MCV of 86 fL
and an RDW of 18%
. The erythrocyte count was slightly reduced at 3.7⋅1012/L
