This specimen shows a plasma cell leukemia with an obvious proliferation of plasma cells. A large number of smudged cells can also be recognized as being plasma cells. Unlike an LPL, the plasma cells in a PCL are CD19 negative.

Classic plasma cells are CD38+, CD138+ and CD19-. Normal plasma cells do not exhibit CD56, but malignant plasma cells do in about 60-80% of cases.
