Hemozoin
Synonyms: Malaria pigment
Hemozoin is a crystallized form of heme and is produced by hemoglobin-digesting-parasites such as Malaria. When the parasite breaks down hemoglobin, the highly reactive and toxic heme is released. To prevent damage to the parasite, it crystallizes the heme into hemozoin. These crystals can be seen as pitch black inclusions in neutrophils and are also called "Malaria pigment".
