Spherocytes, or spherical cells, are small and dark-colored erythrocytes with no central pale portion. These cells arise from an alteration of membrane proteins by, for example, partial phagocytosis (due to, for example, antibody binding in AIHA), hereditary spherocytosis or transfusion of old blood.
