Thrombophagocytosis
Phagocytosis of platelets is a relatively rare phenomenon and occurs due to the same phenomenon as EDTA satellitism; the complete capture of calcium by EDTA leads to membrane alteration in the platelet and exposure of so-called "crypt antigens". When autoantibodies to these antigens are also present, satellitism and phagocytosis by neutrophils and monocytes can occur. This effect is an in vitro phenomenon and, except for a false reduced platelet count, usually has no clinical consequences.
