Neisseria meningitidis
Synonyms: Meningococcal
The meningococcus is an aerobic, gram-negative bacterium that is particularly notorious for causing meningitis (inflammation of the brain) and Waterhouse-Friderischen syndrome (acute suprarenal failure). This bacterium occurs only in humans and is found in the throat of some healthy individuals without causing symptoms.
