Knizocyte
Synonyms: Pinched cell
A knizocyte is a (rare) red blood cell with two or more pale areas, separated by a narrow, hemoglobin-rich band, giving the cell a “pinched” appearance (“pinched cell”). It is an important indicator of Southeast Asian ovalocytosis (SAO) but may also be seen in disorders of cholesterol or lipid metabolism, such as in acute or chronic liver disease.
