Erythrophagocytosis literally means "phagocytizing of erythrocytes," which translates to enclosure and breaking down of erythrocytes by monocytes. This phenomenon is seen relatively rarely in peripheral blood but can occur in severe inflammation, autoimmune hemolytic anemia or hemophagocytic syndrome (HLH).
