Target Cells
Synonyms: Codocytes
Target cells arise due to a relative excess of membrane over the volume of the erythrocyte. This can be caused by an increased concentration of cholesterol in the membrane due to liver disease or an excessively low volume of the erythrocyte due to low hemoglobin. In vivo, the target cell resembles a church bell, but during smearing, the top of the bell is pushed inward, creating the thick tip in the middle.
