Leucine
Synonyms: Wagon wheels, C₆H₁₃NO₂
Pathological
Leucine crystals appear as yellowish-brown, oily spheres with concentric rings and form a pseudo-Maltese cross under polarized light. They are often found in patients with advanced liver failure and may also indicate rare hereditary disorders in amino acid metabolism.
Round calcium carbonate crystals, especially in the presence of bilirubin, can closely resemble leucine crystals.
