RTECs form a monolayer epithelium lining the proximal renal tubule, the lis of Henle, the distal renal tubule, the collecting ducts and the renal papilla. Finding these endothelial cells indicates upper urinary tract damage and may fit infection, acute tubule necrosis or rejection of a transplant kidney, among others.
