This aberrant RET scatter is due to substantial in vitro hemolysis by activation of coagulation. This involves a large amount of erythrocyte fragments (schistocytes) . The extensive fragmentation of erythrocytes creates numerous small particles, which overlap in size with platelets. As a result, they are falsely counted in both impedance and optical platelet measurements, resulting in a false increased platelet count.
